Calvin wins NCAA III men's basketball attendance title
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The 1999-2000 national champion Calvin men's
basketball team has added another national title to its mantle - the
1999-2000 NCAA III attendance crown.
For the 10th time in the last 15 years and for the 11th time in school
history, Calvin has finished as the NCAA Division III leader in men's
basketball attendance. Calvin returned to the top spot as the Division
III attendance leader with 3,496 spectators per game, after last winning
in 1997. Illinois Wesleyan, champion in 1998, finished second at 2,385,
and Hope, last season's title winner, took third with 2,159.
Calvin's average attendance was an improvement of 1,185 fans per game
over its 1998-99 average of 2,284. Calvin's 1999-2000 average was
strengthened by four sell-out crowds as the Knights sold out their home
contest against Hope and also sold out all three of their NCAA III
Tournament games played at the Calvin Fieldouse.
In addition, Calvin and Hope helped the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association to top all Division III conferences for a ninth
straight year with an average of 1,091 fans a game. The eight teams of
the MIAA also edged out the 16 teams of the Middle Atlantic Conference
in total attendance with 111,310 spectators to the MAC's 110,833.
Calvin's average of 3,469 fans is the third highest single-season
average in school history, surpassed only by the 1977-78 average of
3,630 and the 1992-93 NCAA Division III record average of 4,018.
