Development and Evaluation of Artificial Tear and Contact Lens Solutions

Basic information

Evaluation of artificial tears and contact lens solutions using corneal epithelial cells in culture. Our laboratory studies treatments for dry eye disease and contributes to the development of contact lens care solutions. We use corneal epithelial cells in culture and various in vitro and biochemical assays to evaluate efficacy of artificial tears and screen new ophthalmic formulations, including contact lens care products, for possible toxic effects on cells. Because there is evidence that oxidative damage contributes to ocular surface disease in dry eye syndrome, a major focus of the research at this time is evaluation of artificial tears containing antioxidants. We are also currently conducting a genetic analysis of accessory lacrimal glands.
