Psychology Ambassadors

Academics / Departments & Programs / Psychology / Student Experience / Psychology Ambassadors

The Psychology Ambassadors program helps you to learn everything you need to know to plan out a degree that fits your needs and your hopes for the future. Connect with existing students and get the guidance and insight that only veterans of the program can provide.

The Psychology Ambassadors program connects current psychology majors with people who are new to the program. Psychology Ambassadors serve the psychology department in a number of ways, including communicating with prospective psychology students and working to promote the identity of the department in person and online.

Primary objectives:

  • Represent the psychology department and major to underclassmen students and Fridays at Calvin students
  • Serve as a student liaison for students beginning the psychology major
  • Be sensitive to needs, attitudes and opinions of new psychology major students
  • Serve as a student point-person for new psychology majors
  • Assist planning presentation/panel discussions by professionals who are using psychology in their profession
  • Facilitate communication about the psychology department via the psychology website, Facebook page, etc.

Requirements/responsibilities:

  • Meet with Professor Yonker and Cathy Parks at the end of the summer to discuss fall semester activities
  • Meet with first year psychology majors and faculty at the CONNECT! orientation session at the end of the summer
  • Design the annual psychology department T-shirt
  • Meet with your assigned "new psych majors" (~10 people) once a semester to see how they are doing and answer (if possible) their psychology related questions (or refer them to a professor)
  • Attend Fridays at Calvin lunches (when class schedule permits) to meet prospective students and informally talk about the psychology major
  • Attend possible "Orientation to the Psychology Major" presentations in mid-October and mid-April
  • Attend as many psychology department social events as possible (bi-monthly chapel time refreshments, psychology department picnic, etc.)
  • Be available to answer questions and meet with new psychology major students
  • Network with professors and/or other students as appropriate to help meet the needs of fellow psychology major students
  • Assist planning at least two presentation/panel discussions by professionals who are using psychology in their profession
  • Assist in Psychology Department Day
  • Write a Psych News newsletter article
  • Meet once a semester with Professor Yonker and Cathy Parks for Ambassadorial feedback
