Take advantage of the rich community around you and get involved with history department events and broaden your understanding of history and the world through Colloquia lectures.
Colloquia
The history department hosts a variety of lectures by visiting and local scholars hosted on the third Wednesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeter Center lecture hall. History faculty present their research, and senior honors students present their theses in May. History colloquia are open to the Calvin community—students, alumni, faculty, and friends—and all are encouraged to attend. Come early to enjoy refreshments and conversation and to get a good seat.
History lounge
At the end of the hall of history department offices is a lounge for students and faculty. In the afternoons, you can enjoy coffee and use the large table to study or read books, journals, and magazines in the history collection. Or you can relax on the sofa and talk with other history students and faculty.
Social events
Each year, the professors host a Christmas party for history majors and minors that includes great food and a chance to talk with fellow students and faculty. At the end of the year, there is a reception hosted to honor scholarship awardees, honors students, and other award winners. Throughout the year, other themed social events provide opportunities to get to know other history students and faculty.
