Engineering Poster Policy and Guidelines

You may need to make a poster for your Senior Design Team, internship, summer research, or conference.

It is expected that all posters representing work done in association with the Calvin engineering department will be of excellent quality and professional in appearance. Below are the guidelines for creating a poster.

  1. All posters shall be 32" high and 40" wide (landscape) so they will fit in the poster display track system used by the engineering department.  Note that the display tracks cover portions of the poster, so you should leave a margin around the edges.
  2. All posters shall be generated electronically. Students may use PowerPoint or a graphics software program (Fireworks, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator) to create the poster.
  3. The poster must include your name(s) and engineering concentration(s). For example: John Doe, Electrical & Computer Concentration. The word concentration MUST appear on the poster.
  4. Often posters have rather formal sections, e.g., Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Goal and Objective. It is possible that not all of these categories will apply to your particular poster.  Remember, you need to communicate as if you were talking to a general audience.
  5. Here are two examples:

  6. When creating a poster for internship credit (ENGR 185, 285, or 385), work with your internship supervisor before the end of the summer. Employers should review how their company is represented. If you include their company logo somewhere on the poster, they may allow you to print the poster at work. Please be sure to ask first.
  7. All posters should have some pictures of the project or work done. If you are doing an internship and have permission from your employer to take pictures, be sure to take pictures to include on the poster. Examples include the job site, you with co-workers, you in a lab, a client now using your product, or graphs and charts of data collected.
  8. All posters that are presented off-campus at conferences, seminars, etc. must include some acknowledgement of Calvin. The most common is by using one of the Calvin logos. See the communications and marketing website for several samples and instructions on proper use of the logo. Note that these logos are bitmap formats and should not be scaled too much (otherwise you will get a pixelated image). Contact the engineering department office or work with a faculty member to arrange for printing a conference poster.
  9. All posters (EXCEPT Senior Design Posters) should be printed only. Do not mount them to anything unless you have consulted with the engineering department office. Spray adhesives are prohibited in the engineering and science buildings. Senior Design students will be given specific and detailed instructions for posters relating to the Senior Design Project night. Likewise, students participating in the Internship Poster Session will be given specific instructions related to the Internship Poster Session.
  10. Generally, there are three ways to plot your poster:
    1. Plot internally directly to the engineering department plotters.
      • If you plot your poster to an engineering department plotter, then you will also need to “plot” to a PDF file to submit an electronic copy to the department.
      • Note that your plot account will be charged for all plots made—even if they do not turn out.
    2. Plot on-campus to instructional graphics.
      • Plot your poster to a PDF file and either email it or deliver it on a CD or USB drive.
    3. Plot off-campus.
      • Plot your poster to a PDF file and work either with your professor or the engineering department office to plot off-campus.

If you wish to print a poster yourself to one of the engineering plotters, you will be charged $0.35 per square foot for color prints to your printing account. The estimated charge will be $3–3.50. Be careful before printing—your account will be charged for every plot you make, even if they don’t turn out. We suggest that you plot check on 11x17.
