Q: What do you do as a Project Manager?
A: I am a Project Manager for Durables at Amway, so I am working in product development. Amway is the largest direct-selling company in the world. We have projects in areas like nutrition, cosmetics, and home, and my work is part of the home category. As a Project Manager, I am the main point of contact for a new product, and I lead a team of 15 cross-functional team members. Each team includes people from areas like finance, packaging, quality assurance, marketing, and engineering. I work to coordinate and communicate among these different areas as we launch new products. Amway is a global company too, so I’m also a key point of contact for our different markets globally. Project managers are ultimately responsible for delivering a product on time, on cost, and on profile.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: I love seeing the big picture and seeing things come together — from early on when a product is just like an idea, through defining the profile and bringing the product to life, to the actual launch of it. The whole process can take anywhere from 2 to 4 years. I get to collaborate with a lot of different areas of the company and work with people who are experts in their area. They’ll come in at different stages to contribute to the project, but I’m the one that gets to see the project start to finish.
Q: What would your advice be to Calvin students?
A: I would say it’s important to go in with the mindset of continuing to learn from others. When I started my role at Amway, I focused on taking in as much as I could and learning as much as I could from my coworkers. Go into your job with an open mind and be ready to learn from others.
